COBRA

COBRA = Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985

COBRA coverage will cost me $1401.48 for family medical coverage. This is cheaper than the IEEE insurance. However there are still questions:

1) where does the money for the continued coverage come from (severance pay?)?
2) Does this affect my deductible (which I have already met for this year)?

COBRA is so expensive that most out of work people opt for no coverage at all. If you need coverage getting the first job with coverage you can get is your best choice. In MA, where I live there is Unemployment Compensation for the first thirty weeks with no paycheck. They are very good about making this easy to get, and it is about twice what COBRA costs. This doesn't leave you with much, but with a pregnant wife you don't have a lot of choices.

During my last layoff (Dell), my wife was still employed (by Dell) so I opted to take the money and sign on to her insurance. I am still looking for a carrier here. Individual/family coverage is very expensive and it looks like I, as you say, may have little choice but to go with COBRA.

I could just opt out and take the money. I can afford to pay cash for a regular OB/GYN appoinment for her, but if there are any complications then the bank account would be zeroed. Also, I can afford to pay COBRA for only one month. We'd have coverage for December only. If I am still unemployed in January, then I am screwed.

This is why my loves that I went a couple year without insurance. Duncan's company went up to employee portion paid of just over what your cobra is. Thank God this year they changed it to a reasonable 400.00 a month.

You are eligible for the Arizona State health car benefits after your employment ends, and actually Arizona has an excellent program. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Perhaps you will come visit us in New Mexico over the holiday or we can come out your way and we can catch up :)
