There is a great need for end-to-end encryption for ALL communications. Your aunt Edna's bunions may not be high on the list of things that you may think require encryption, but that is not the point. You are not a criminal so have nothing to hide is also not the point. The point is that no matter how banal, how mundane, vapid or trite a topic is, IT IS NO ONE'S BUSINESS BUT YOURS and the people you are sharing it with.
Look into PGP, AES, VPN, OTR (used for instant message), snail mail, and other techniques for sharing your data and communication. The phone apps are out there, too, but we ALL must use them and we must use them every time.
Use of encryption makes you look suspicious? Worry less about what your government thinks of you and soon your government will begin to worry more about what you think of it. Encryption is not suspicious if EVERYONE is using it for everything.
