Bah! I was trying to transfer some files to another computer using my USB key and USB was not working.

So it was back to modprobe...

I did a quick check using "lsmod" to see what USB modules were installed. Nothing under usbcore was. I did a "modprobe -l | grep usb" to get a list of available modules. I decided I needed usb-uhci (I have an intel based machine) and usb-storage.

In the output were the two lines:
/lib/modules/2.6.12-12mdk/kernel/drivers/usb/storage/usb-storage.ko.gz
/lib/modules/2.6.12-12mdk/kernel/drivers/usb/host/uhci-hcd.ko.gz

I decided I needed usb-uhci (I have an intel based machine) and usb-storage.

"modprobe -i usb-uhci"
"modprobe -i usb-storage"

Unplug and replug a couple of times and it worked beautifully.

Still, I don't need to recompile my kernel.

Here is the lovely bit, I also saw this line:
/lib/modules/2.6.12-12mdk/kernel/drivers/usb/misc/legousbtower.ko.gz

Ooooooh... I feel a Lego robot project coming on. :-)

There is also this one:
/lib/modules/2.6.12-12mdk/kernel/3rdparty/qc-usb/quickcam.ko.gz

I might try to webcam some of my robots.
