The Left can't wait to politicize tragedy.
Critical views of science in the newsHow many massacres will it take for gutless politicians to stand up to gun nuts?

It's happened again. A deranged American male has gone on a rampage with a semiautomatic weapon, shooting down a score of people—this time at a political gathering in Tucson, Ariz. If past experience is any guide, gun lovers will trot out the familiar excuses: Guns don't kill people, people do. If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns. If more people at the meeting in Arizona had been packing heat, they could have shot the bad guy before he killed so many people. [...]
John Horgan completely missed the fact that there was another person with a handgun at the site of Giffords' tragedy who was ready to use it to DEFEND. Let's put aside the US Constitution and the Second Amendment - all Horgan is doing is making sure that criminals have an edge over their victims.
The guns are out there. They can't be recalled. The genie is out of the bottle. He wants the weak to be utterly defenseless. Gun bans don't have an effect on criminals
. Assuming that guns could effectively be outlawed and recalled, the criminals will move on to other weapons - the machete. Don't believe me? It happened in Australia
The statistic Mr. Horgan cited is over 100,000 people injured or killed by a firearm anually. Compare this to the number of abortions: in 2005 there were 820,151 babies killed
for medical reasons or personal "choice", and yet we place very little restriction on sex. Sex leads to far more annual deaths than guns yet sex education is required in most schools and firearm safety is not.
Back to the second amendment and the larger picture. There is no army in the world that will be able to successfully invade the United States. Period. With so many citizens owning firearms, an invasion force would have zero chance of holding the country. Personal ownership of firearms virtually guarantees this country will remain free from invasion.
I hate to wax into cliche', but the second amendment guarantees all the others. The worst thing for a totalitarian government to have is an armed populace. They would be overthrown quickly. The second amendment protects us from our own government
John Horgan, stick to something you know - science. Politics and Constitutional Rights are clearly out of your sphere of knowledge. You are not well reasoned or based in fact or logic. You are based in emotion. You work for a scientific publication. What happened to your objectivity?
