GENEVA, Switzerland (CNN) -- The World Health Organization on Wednesday raised its pandemic alert to 5, its second-highest level, warning of widespread human infection from the swine flu outbreak that originated in Mexico.

Dr. Margaret Chan, the U.N. agency's director-general, said the decision to raise the alert on the 6-point scale indicated that all countries should "immediately" activate pandemic preparedness plans. [...]

Now we come to the "tin foil hat" portion of this post...

Let's look back in time to a Department of Health and Human Services declaration regarding anthrax.

It seems to me (IANAL) that this same waiver of responsibility can be applied to other widespread disease outbreaks.

Although this is called "swine flu", there is so far no hard connection to swine. The H1N1 hybrid flu has attributes of avian, swine, and human influenzas. Why was it not called a variation of avian flu? Oh... H5N1 already has that pandemic market cornered.

But... hmmmm... How very timely for such a declaration. Just saying. Seems a really good way to keep people indoors and not talking with friends/neighbors about how poorly our government is representing us and how far they have deviated from our founding documents. It is kinda hard to organize or participate in protests and rallies when public health concerns are keeping you home.

I agree that the degree to which the threat is being trumpeted is absurd. I also agree that it is unfortunate for people whose livelihood depends on pigs that this is called Swine Flu. I can't see this declaration of level 5 as an act of suppressing protest.

You did read the warning?

About the tin foil hats? I noted it, but forgot to wear my own. ;)

Actually, my favorite part is how Mexico is giving itself a 4 day weekend leading up to one of their favorite holidays. Neato!

Ya... compensation for the whole - do not gather in large groups... or incentive to decrease their pouplation?

I'm on the conspiracy fence on this one. While I agree that it is highly likely that this is being taken advantage of for political gains, I am still hard pressed to fully accept it.

Yeah... I can go deep with this one....

Obama had just visited Mexico. What if it was a botched attempt by "unfriendly parties" involved in bio-terrorism to attack the administration? The president sees many people each day. The incubation period is seven days. It could immobilize the government for a few days, and kill some of the more elderly members of the House and Senate.

With key people out being sick, the country becomes rudderless and vulnerable. As far as the choice of using influenza, well, most developed nations are capable of developing their own vaccines and flu is normally not fatal, just disabling. It is a minimal risk vehicle for biological attack.

...yeah... conspiracy theories are fun! Quick! Call George Noory!

The Who? Didn't they disband decades ago?

This is the group made up of physicians, right? Does that make them all Doctor Who?
