Free gas

.. but only free for the crook.

For my coworker? Not free. He lost only three gallons of gasoline (his tank was mostly empty) but it cost $440 to replace his fuel tank.

This occurred between late Friday night of June 6, 2008 and early Saturday morning June 7, 2008 in the Oracle/Miracle Mile area of Tucson, AZ.

There is nothing to stop them from doing this again.

One can hope they will blow themselves to hell doing this. Of course that also means you loose your car/truck in the process. This and stealing catalytic converters off high sitting trucks seem to be the crimes of the future.

I've been reading about this type of crime. With our current infrastructure, there isn't much we can do to stop it.

Stopping it would require one or more of the following:
- convincing everyone to respect property (preferred, but unlikely)
- having video surveying of all legal parking areas
- switch away from liquid fuel for cars
- many more enforcement officers

The crime really bothers me, because as you noted, the cost to the victim is pretty high, and the benefit to the criminal is negligible. Sorry for your co-worker.
