Petraeus Recommends Troop Pause
By ANNE FLAHERTY 04.08.08, 11:50 AM ET

WASHINGTON - The U.S. general commanding the Iraq war called Tuesday for an open-ended suspension of U.S. troop withdrawals this summer, asserting that an overly rapid withdrawal would jeopardize recent security gains. [...]

I heard the beginning of the the speech this morning. It was a pretty damning rebuttal of the Bush war plan. I have been critical of Bush's plan in the past and still remain dubious. However, this speech gives the liberals the fodder they need to:

  1. remove the troops from Iraq in a haphazard and destabilizing way and,
  2. to win the Presidential election.

Portions of the Petraeus speech will undoubtedly be used in election political ads. Still, he did stop short of saying we should pull out entirely. But, that is not how "The Left" will present it.

This is the mess we get when politics, politicians, and political correctness get involved in military operations. War, if it is anything, is not politically correct. If President Bush had taken a heavy hand against the enemy from the start, things would be very different.

Personally, I think we need to establish a permanent base and present a long term presence in Iraq to help with an upcoming foe.

Maybe, but both Clinton and Obama (who don't represent the entire 'Left') have indicated that they would have troops there for quite a while. IIRC, both have indicated 50,000 would be there at least through 2010.
