...is a book I am reading. Written by Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle, and Michael Flynn.

I really like Niven. He writes some of the best scifi I have ever read.

Niven's law: "No cause is so noble that it won't attract fuggheads."

wow, I remember reading that book thinking it was cool until I got to see what they really do with the rockets at the Smithsonian. There is now way its plausible at all....but hey its scifi.

The book is not flawed. You are mis-remembering it. They don't use the Titan rocket at the Smithsonian for the reason it was cut in half. The important thing there was the character that was the "keeper" of the rocket.

The rocket they are trying to use (still haven't gotten to the end of the book) is one that was in storage in a hangar in Dryden AFB in California.
