WASHINGTON, Oct 26 (Reuters) - President George W. Bush signed legislation on Thursday to build 700 miles (1,126 km) of fencing along the U.S.-Mexican border, an election-year move against illegal immigration aimed at helping Republicans.

Bush approves 700 miles of fence on south border

Here is a clear cut case of OPINION and AGENDA being passed off as news. This belongs on an op-ed or commentary page.

I would guess ol' Steve has never lived near a border.

My opinion on the fence is that it is a step in the right direction, but will need continual support to maintain it. It will slow down the flow some, but it alone will have little affect on illegal immigration. The construction of the fence needs to be combined with law enforcement. There are already laws on the books to prevent illegals from maintaining a presence in the USA, they simply have no enforcement backing. By simply enforcing these existing laws, we would eliminate a source of the draw.

Unfortunetly, the fence may actually cause more problems than it fixes if we don't take steps to curb corruption in Border Agents. I read an article yesterday (but can't find the link now) where corruption in border agents of all types are becoming more and more likely to take bribes from Alien smugglers and drug runners. From Border patrol to Immigration to FBI agents. The article focused mostly on Texas, but mentioned all the southern states. One point made was that the harder it is to get stuff across the border, the more likely it will be that bribes will come into play. And our guys don't seem to be saying no to it.
