I have finally gotten my kernel and all the modules to compile. There was one single point that it kept sticking on: the RTSP netfilter.

I think the source files that came with the kernel may be incomplete. Make was complaining about a header file missing.

That was when I decided to skip that module. All is better now. The SMP kernel has been successfully built. Now I need to install the new CPU and see how much speed I pick up.

OH HELL YEAH!

It is DEFINITELY running faster. No question about it. Dual core rules. I have two instances of a DVD playing and am switching between desktops (my current config supports four) and it isn't even lagging a little bit.

I can get even more speed by doubling my memory to 512MB of ECC SDRAM. I'll have to look up the cost of that stuff. After that, I am topped out on this hardware. Nothing more I can do would give me noticible performance increases.

I just extended the life of this hardware for another couple of years with a $15 CPU.

Fantastic.
