Magnetic Monopoles Detected In A Real Magnet For The First Time

ScienceDaily (2009-09-04) -- Researchers have for the first time observed magnetic monopoles and how they emerge in a real material. Magnetic monopoles are hypothetical particles proposed by physicists that carry a single magnetic pole, either a magnetic north pole or south pole. In the material world, this is quite exceptional because magnetic particles are usually observed as dipoles, north and south combined.

Oh dear Lord. Folks, the world is about to change. Give it a few years for this to go mainstream and the material science folks to come up with appropriate materials for consumers.

This is a life changing thing. It will affect computing, transportation, space exploration, medical technology, and wow wow wow... I wish I could explain it all to you.

Oh. Wow. Ohwowohwowohwow... I really thought about MSE for a while and enjoyed my classes in it.
What I found interesting was the comment "...showing that they interact in the same way as electric charges." That means we don't need a new theoretical basis for manipulating them either. With operative temps of 0.6-2.0 K means super-computing is about to change but drastically. The long term effects of this... Oh my... Thanks for the article!

I was about to comment on the 0.6-2 K temperature as well.

Working at that temp is quite limiting...I don't understand your comment about super-computing.

I will have to look up the Science article. Yay for UA free E-journals.

What really makes a super-computer is super-conductivity. Even "high temp" super conductors aren't known above 150 K or more. Though material science has been raising the temps, the typical super computer still runs at temps of 30 K or less. Reducing that down to 2 K isn't really that huge a jump, especially for the benefits of a magnetic monopole...

I think I'm going to wait for a confirming announcement from another group. This has the potential to be very important ... or it could be another thing like Price and his monopoles 35 years ago.
