SCA
Specifically, when you have a power outage...

There is something to be said for being a SCA geek. The power went out this morning some time around 5:15. Did I panic? No. Since I am usually the only one up at that hour in my house I am perfectly used to groping around in the dark. But I did need light for some things. Candles candles candles... Dang. We had only one large scented decorative one that I could find. So I lit it. Not sure where the others were. Oil lamps... Liquid paraffin? Can't find it.

I have some LED hand-crank flashlights but they are noisy and bothersome to have to depend on for extended time periods. My 6V flashlight battery died as I used it. I have a spare battery for it... outside... in the rain... in a locked trailer... in a box... at the bottom of a pile.

What was I to do? Back to the oil lamp... and the SCA. I fashioned a lamp from aluminum foil, a rolled and twisted piece of paper towel, a glass custard dish (to provide a stable base), and olive oil (extra virgin, first cold press, thankyouverymuch). The SCA can provide many useful skills and technologies that can make your life easy when modern skills and technology fail.

I have light.

Yes. Geek is good.

Furthermore, breakfast can still be made and that means hot coffee for scribe_ari because I know the value of fire and spent a lot of money getting my kitchen piped for a gas range. As a matter of morning efficiency, I ground scribe_ari's coffee last night. All that needs to be done is to dig out the French press and heat water in the kettle on my gas range.

Very good.

But the kids still can't see and I won't trust children with the awesome power of fire. I had a bag of glow sticks left over from Halloween. Originally, I bought several bags because they are very useful for lighting a port-a-john at night at SCA events. I used some for Halloween festivities and kept another bag in reserve for the next SCA event. Muah ha ha ha! The kids have light!

Hope you have power back man! Not sure if we lost it here.

According to Ari, we got power back at 7:40am. You probably didn't lose power. One block away, the power was on for that whole section. My half? Dark.

My little lamp did shine, though, according to Ari.

MacGyver would be so proud!
