Brett is a very good friend of mine. He works at New Mexico State University. He sent me this:
The university had its convocation (kind of a State of the
Union address) on Thursday, and Dr. Martin, the president, told some
pretty good jokes I hadn't heard before.
He said that UNM and NMSU were vying for the privilege of putting "NM"
on their football helmets. Naturally, ours would represent "New
Mexico", whereas UNM thinks they stand for "knowledge" and "motivation".
In an attempt to influence Congress, UNM sent a delegation to lobby
for more education funding from Washington. They're currently lost
Tired of the mean-spiritedness these jokes represent, UNM students
drove down from ABQ and threw dynamite across the Dona Ana county
line. Some Aggies picked it up, lit it, and threw it back.
An "aggie" is someone that is a student or staff at an agricultural land grant university. Texas A&M, and NMSU are both agricultural land grant colleges and the students are known as "aggies". Beside agriculture, both universities have excellent engineering colleges.
UNM=University of New Mexico, in Albuquerque, NM
NMSU=New Mexico State University, in Las Cruces, NM
NMSU and UNM are rivals.
